Spiritual abuse happens over time. People don't knowingly join a "cult," or a high control group. They join something that they believe will bring meaning to their lives, something that promises growth, the ultimate answers.

Spiritual abuse is characterized by psychological manipulation, erosion of personal identity and reality, and the control of information and behavior. There is an us-versus-them mentality. If you have doubts or questions, there is something wrong with you. 

The fear of leaving an abusive group can be excruciating due to the strong possibility of being ostracized or shunned by friends and family. Often when someone decides to leave, they are left completely alone, without resources or support. 

One of the most effective ways of coping with this very difficult loss is to talk with others who have had similar experiences. In this group we will embrace personal values, encourage curiosity, and learn to trust ourselves.
